New Year, New Game: Millie Memory v0.1

It's the first week of 2024 and, this year, I've resolved to publish at least one piece of art each week for the entire year. It can be a game, a demo, an experiment, a picture, a video, or a recording and can be a brand new piece or an improved version of an existing work.

The goal is to get better at creating and releasing work publicly. Perfectionism mixed with a tendency to think a little too big often prevents me from actually making or releasing anything, so the idea here is to make a lot of small, extremely imperfect work to build better artistic habits.

For my first release, I’m publishing a game I started working on at the end of last year called Millie Memory. I’ve made demos in older versions of Godot before, but never really released anything, so in returning to Godot with version 4.0, I decided to build something “easy” (nothing is every easy in software development) that I’d get a kick out of making and playing. I soon landed on making a simple memory game featuring pictures of my dog.

I followed BornCG’s Godot memory game tutorial and made my own customizations along the way.  The tutorial was authored using Godot 3.2, so if you decide to use this tutorial you will need to accommodate for version differences in the editor and Godot script.

This release of Millie Memory is v0.1 because I still have lots of features to add before I can call it a major release, including:

  • Better start, pause and win screens
  • Music and sound effects
  • Difficulty selector
  • Credits screen
  • Additional cards and card styles
  • and maybe some other pups so Millie has company!

Until next time, happy new year!
